MICHIKO & KUMIKO

A portrait of 2 sisters in their home in Fukuoka, Japan (2026)

Michiko and Kumiko are sisters in their late seventies whose lives remain closely intertwined despite no longer sharing a home. After many years living together, they continue to spend time together almost every day. Their relationship is defined by quiet companionship, care and a familiarity built over a lifetime.

This project grew from an interest in the relationships that shape us long after the milestones of marriage, parenthood and career have passed.

Through a series of portraits, the work explores sisterhood, ageing and enduring connection. The images focus on the small gestures, routines and moments of togetherness that often go unnoticed yet reveal the depth of a lifelong bond.

At its heart, the project is a reflection on intimacy in later life and the comfort of being deeply known by another person. In a culture that often overlooks older women, it celebrates a relationship built not on grand declarations but on decades of shared history and everyday care.
